Bashar Murad makes pop music with something real at stake. The East Jerusalem born, Paris based Palestinian singer songwriter uses his songs to take on gender norms, the Israeli occupation, and what it means to be openly gay in a conservative society. Most of his work is self produced out of the studios of Sabreen Association for Artistic Development, giving him tight creative control over a sound that mixes Arabic and English and pulls from a wide emotional register. His collaboration with Icelandic techno punk act Hatari on "Klefi / Samed" brought him a much wider audience after Hatari's notorious flag protest at Eurovision 2019 in Tel Aviv. His debut EP Maskhara followed in June 2021, featuring four tracks including "Antenne" with rapper Tamer Nafar. He later released a second Arabic language EP, Nafas, and in early 2024 competed in Iceland's national Eurovision selection Söngvakeppnin with the song "Vestrið villt / Wild West", finishing second.
