Few Berlin bands hit as hard live as the Beatsteaks, and that reputation is no accident. Formed in 1995, this punk and alternative rock outfit spent their early years grinding through support slots, including opening for the Sex Pistols at their tenth ever gig, before touring with Bad Religion, Die Ärzte, and Die Toten Hosen to build a serious following. Die Ärzte even gave them a shoutout in the 2003 song "Unrockbar", which did no harm to their profile at all. The real breakthrough came with the 2004 album Smack Smash and the single "I Don't Care as Long as You Sing", which won Best German Act at the MTV European Music Awards that year. Since then they have put out a string of albums, from the Peter Fox co written Boombox to the self titled record featuring "Gentleman of the Year", and most recently PLEASE in 2024. Their live shows remain the stuff of legend, with sold out Berlin dates at venues like the Wuhlheide drawing tens of thousands of fans.
