Few banjo players have pushed the instrument as far as Béla Fleck. Named after three classical composers, Bartók, Webern, and Janáček, he turned the banjo into a vehicle for bluegrass, jazz, jazz fusion, classical, and just about everything in between. His work with New Grass Revival helped reshape what bluegrass could be, and he later co founded Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, whose album Flight of the Cosmic Hippo hit number one on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Fleck has racked up 18 Grammy wins across 41 nominations, covering categories as different as Best Bluegrass Album and Best Classical Crossover Album. His 2001 collaboration with Edgar Meyer, Perpetual Motion, featured heavy hitters like John Williams, Joshua Bell, and Evelyn Glennie. He has also composed concertos for banjo and performed them with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, worked with tabla master Zakir Hussain, and appeared at pretty much every major American roots music festival worth naming.
