Ben van den Dungen Trio takes its cues from a philosophy that jazz should be danceable and carry the blues within it, a sentiment once voiced by Art Blakey. The trio plays without a piano, and Ben van den Dungen sees that stripped back format as a feature rather than a limitation. A smaller, pianoless lineup opens up the music in unexpected directions, giving the playing an improvisational freedom that keeps things unpredictable for everyone in the room, including the musicians themselves. The group draws inspiration from landmark small group recordings like Sonny Rollins Live at the Village Vanguard and Joe Henderson's State of the Tenor. The point, though, is not to recreate those records note for note. It is the adventurous, exploratory spirit behind them that the trio reaches for.
