About
Also known as: Bernard Joseph Butler, バーナード・バトラー
Bernard Butler built his reputation as the guitarist for Suede, co writing and playing on the albums Suede and Dog Man Star before leaving the band in 1994, midway through recording the latter. BBC journalist Mark Savage called him 'one of Britain's most original and influential guitarists', and he came in at number 24 in a 2010 BBC poll of the greatest guitarists of the last 30 years. He is often seen playing a 1961 cherry red Gibson ES 355 TD SV with a Bigsby vibrato tailpiece. Since leaving Suede he has kept remarkably busy across several fronts. He formed the duo McAlmont and Butler with David McAlmont, releasing the singles 'Yes' and 'You Do', and later reunited with Brett Anderson in The Tears. His production work spans an enormous range of artists, from The Libertines and Duffy to Pet Shop Boys and Neneh Cherry. His work on Duffy's debut Rockferry, the best selling album in the UK in 2008, earned him serious recognition as a producer. In 2024 he released his third solo album, Good Grief, on his own 355 Recordings label.
