About
Also known as: Betlehem
Few bands can claim to have accidentally named a genre, but Bethlehem from Grevenbroich, Germany, did exactly that when their 1994 debut album Dark Metal gave the scene its label. Formed in 1991 and built around bassist Jürgen Bartsch as its constant driving force, the band spent three decades twisting black metal, death doom, and gothic metal into something genuinely unsettling, cycling through a string of extreme vocalists who each left a mark on the sound. Their 1996 album Dictius te necare remains a touchstone for depressive black metal, with Rainer Landfermann delivering what one critic called one of the most extreme vocal performances ever recorded by a human. The band kept evolving well past that point, contributing tracks to the soundtrack of Harmony Korine's film Gummo and eventually landing their 2019 album Lebe dich leer on the German charts. Vocalist Yvonne Onielar Wilczynska fronted that record, carrying the band's trademark darkness into fully contemporary territory.
