About
Beyond the Pale are a Toronto band who have carved out a genuinely distinctive niche by blending klezmer, Balkan and Romanian music with bluegrass, jazz, reggae, funk and classical chamber music. The name nods directly to the Eastern European Jewish Pale of Settlement, which sits at the heart of their musical identity. They bring together mandolin, clarinet, accordion, violin and bass in combinations that feel both rooted and wildly inventive, and their live shows are known for being as exuberant as they are precise. Since forming in 1998, they have played Carnegie Hall, toured Australia and Brazil, and collaborated with the likes of Theodore Bikel and Josh Socalled Dolgin. Their albums on Borealis Records have landed them multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards, including wins for Instrumental Group of the Year with both Consensus in 2004 and Postcards in 2009. Their 2017 release Ruckus kept the momentum going with another nomination in that same category.
