About
Also known as: Gustavo Roy Díaz
Big Boy, born Gustavo Roy Díaz, is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of reggaeton in Puerto Rico. His debut album 'Mr. Big' dropped in 1993, and the single 'Maria' became a worldwide hit almost immediately. Through the mid to late 1990s he kept building momentum with songs like 'Mis Ojos Lloran Por Ti', which peaked at number 18 on the Top Latin Songs chart, and 'He Chocado Con La Vida', blending American rap with Latin and Afro Caribbean rhythms in a way that set the template for the genre. His 2002 album 'The Phenomenon' earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Hip Hop Album and put him firmly on the map across Central and South America. He went on to work with artists including Nicky Jam and MC Ceja, and bounced between labels like Sony Music and Universal Music before eventually stepping back from recording. After a seven year hiatus he resurfaced with a collaboration with underground reggaeton artist Jamsha, and has released music as recently as 2017.
