About
Guitar Player magazine dubbed him 'Titan of the Telecaster', and if you've ever heard Bill Kirchen play, you know why. The Connecticut born guitarist built his reputation with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, whose wild mix of rock and roll, hardcore country, boogie and rockabilly made them a genuine phenomenon in the San Francisco Bay area in the early 1970s. Kirchen's guitar and vocal work on tracks like 'Mama Hated Diesels' and 'Down to Seeds and Stems Again Blues' became touchstones for what would later be called the Americana movement. After Commander Cody split in 1976, Kirchen kept busy with his swing outfit the Moonlighters and a long creative friendship with Nick Lowe, who produced the Moonlighters' second album. He also put in studio time with Elvis Costello, Link Wray and Gene Vincent. His signature sound, which he calls 'dieselbilly', blends country, blues, rockabilly, Western swing and boogie woogie, and he coaxes it out of a 1959 Fender Telecaster he picked up by trading a Gibson SG with a stranger on a bus.
