Few guitarists have left a mark on punk rock quite like Billie Joe Armstrong, the driving force behind Green Day since he co founded the band with Mike Dirnt back in 1987. Starting out as Sweet Children, they eventually landed on the Green Day name in 1989, and by the time Dookie dropped in 1994 the band had broken through to a mainstream audience in a big way, going on to sell over 60 million records worldwide. Armstrong has also kept busy outside Green Day, playing guitar and singing in Pinhead Gunpowder since 1991, and fronting a string of side projects including the Foxboro Hot Tubs, the Network, the Longshot, and the Coverups. His collaborations stretch pretty wide too. He co wrote the Go Go's 2001 track "Unforgiven", contributed songs with Penelope Houston, and sang backing vocals alongside Melissa Auf der Maur on a Ryan Adams track. He also co wrote the book and lyrics for the Broadway musical American Idiot and even took on the role of St. Jimmy in the show for a run of weeks. On the business side, he founded Adeline Records in 1997, which helped bring acts like AFI and Dillinger Four to wider attention.
