About
Black Pumas built their sound in Austin, Texas, where guitarist and producer Adrian Quesada teamed up with singer Eric Burton after a mutual friend made the introduction. Quesada, already a Grammy winner with Latin funk outfit Grupo Fantasma, was hunting for a voice to match the retro funk and R&B tracks he had been developing. Burton turned out to be exactly that. The two clicked fast, worked out their material during a weekly residency at Austin's C Boys Heart & Soul Bar, and signed to ATO Records. Their self titled debut landed in 2019 and quickly drew serious attention, with Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR and The Guardian all weighing in enthusiastically. The single "Colors" became their signature moment, reaching number one on AAA radio after a performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! went wide. The album picked up a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, and "Colors" was nominated for Record of the Year, bringing their total Grammy nominations to six across two ceremonies. Austin's mayor even declared a Black Pumas Day in their honour.
