About
Blackfield is the brainchild of Steven Wilson, the man behind Porcupine Tree, and Israeli rock musician Aviv Geffen. Where Porcupine Tree leans into long, complex compositions, Blackfield zeroes in on something more compact and melancholic: short, carefully crafted pop songs with a progressive rock sensibility. Wilson himself has described it as being about the art of the three minute pop song, a place where his instincts and Geffen's met in the middle. Over six albums, the two have shifted the balance of power back and forth. The first two records were a genuine equal partnership, with Wilson taking a heavy share of vocals and songwriting. From the third album onward, Geffen stepped into the driver's seat, writing nearly everything himself. Wilson briefly floated leaving the project in 2014, but came back as a full partner for Blackfield V in 2017. Their sixth album, For the Music, arrived in 2020 with Geffen again leading the charge.
