Ritchie Blackmore, the guitar legend behind Deep Purple and Rainbow, took a sharp left turn in 1997 when he shelved the hard rock world and started Blackmore's Night with his wife and vocalist Candice Night. The project leans deep into medieval and Renaissance folk sounds, blending acoustic guitar, mandolin, flute, and violin into something that sits comfortably between neo medieval folk and new age without feeling like a Renaissance fair novelty. It is a genuine creative commitment, not a side project. Over the years the band has built a devoted following on that niche but sincere aesthetic. Their 2021 track "Second Element" shows the duo still active and putting out new music, consistent with a catalogue that stretches back across multiple albums. Live, they have been known to weave in unexpected covers from Blackmore's earlier career, giving longtime fans a thread back to his classic rock roots while keeping the overall sound firmly in folk territory.
