About
Blood Ceremony have carved out a genuinely distinctive corner of heavy music by centering the flute as a lead instrument rather than an afterthought. The Toronto band built their sound around singer, flutist, and organist Alia O'Brien, whose playing draws inevitable comparisons to Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, layered over riffs that land somewhere between vintage Black Sabbath and British folk acts like Fairport Convention. Guitarist Sean Kennedy, who handles most of the songwriting, once described the band as a "folkier Sabbath", which just about nails it. Since their 2008 self titled debut on Rise Above Records, they have put out four more albums, with The Old Ways Remain arriving in May 2023. They spent time on the road with Electric Wizard and supported Ghost on European and North American tours, building a dedicated following in the occult rock scene. O'Brien also plays with Badge Époque Ensemble and picked up a Canadian Screen Award nomination for a song she cowrote for the film Octavio Is Dead!
