About
Also known as: Bochum Symphony Orchestra
Founded in 1918 as the Städtisches Orchester Bochum, this German orchestra has grown from a theatre accompaniment ensemble into one of the Ruhr region's major symphonic forces. Based in Bochum, they now call the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr home, a venue they moved into in October 2016. Their repertoire has ranged wide over the decades, from opera to contemporary music, and their recording of Joseph Marx's complete works for ASV Records earned real recognition: the first disc won the British Music Society's best CD of the Month, and the second was nominated for a Grammy. Some highlights stand out from their long history. In 2006 they performed a landmark new version of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's opera Die Soldaten at the Ruhrtriennale, then took it to the Lincoln Center Festival in New York City in 2008. Steven Sloane led the orchestra for nearly three decades, their longest serving GMD, and twice steered them to the German Music Publishers' Association prize for best concert programme. Tung Chieh Chuang took over in 2021, followed by Aurel Dawidiuk from the 2026 to 2027 season onward.
