Bon Iver started as a one man project when Justin Vernon retreated to a remote cabin in western Wisconsin for three months, recording what became the debut album For Emma, Forever Ago with little more than a Shure SM57 microphone and an old Silvertone guitar. He wrote the lyrics by humming wordless melodies and building text around the sounds of syllables, which gives the record its distinctly raw, atmospheric feel. That album, pressed in a run of just 500 copies, eventually earned widespread critical acclaim after a Pitchfork review sent things snowballing in late 2007. What began as a solo outlet grew into a full band, and Bon Iver went on to win a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album for their self titled second record. The third album, 22, A Million, pushed into more experimental territory and was met with strong reviews, while the fourth, I, I, scored a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. The band has shown no signs of standing still, with a fifth album, Sable, Fable, arriving in 2025.
