About
Also known as: Breakstra, The Breakestra
Breakestra is a ten piece funk orchestra out of Los Angeles, put together by multi instrumentalist Miles Tackett, aka Musicman. The whole project is soaked in late 1960s and early 1970s funk and soul jazz, channeling the same energy that hip hop producers were digging for samples a decade or two later. Their early releases on Stones Throw leaned heavily on covers and break filled grooves, but 2005's Hit the Floor on Ubiquity Records marked a shift toward all original material blending hip hop, funk, and soul. Their 2009 follow up Dusk Till Dawn brought in guest rapper Chali 2na and soul vocalist Afrodyete, rounding out a sound that feels like a living, breathing record crate. Tackett also plays the group's music live in rotating lineups, and the band even landed a spot on the Tony Hawk's American Wasteland soundtrack covering The Mohawks' classic track Champ.
