Brian May built his own guitar, the Red Special, and used it to craft one of the most recognisable sounds in rock. As lead guitarist and backing vocalist of Queen, he layered his parts into huge, orchestral walls of sound, and he wrote a stack of the band's biggest songs, including "We Will Rock You", "I Want It All", "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "The Show Must Go On". Before Queen there was Smile, a progressive rock band he formed with Roger Taylor, and he has sung lead on a handful of Queen tracks too, like "'39" and "Some Day One Day". He's also a proper astrophysicist, finishing a PhD at Imperial College London in 2007 and working as a collaborator on NASA's New Horizons Pluto mission, which is where the "New Horizons" tracks in his catalogue come from. He co founded Asteroid Day, and there's even an asteroid named after him. He was knighted in 2023, and he's ranked among the greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone and Guitar World readers.
