Brian Setzer had already made his name fronting the Stray Cats when he took things in a bigger direction and formed the Brian Setzer Orchestra in 1992. The Los Angeles based big band blends his signature rockabilly guitar work with swing, jump blues and jazz, drawing on the sounds of Louis Prima and Big Joe Turner as much as Elvis Presley and Eddie Cochran. That combination clicked in a major way on their 1998 album The Dirty Boogie, where their cover of Prima's "Jump, Jive an' Wail" became a genuine Billboard hit and reignited mainstream interest in swing music. The BSO has built a loyal following through relentless live performance, and their annual Christmas shows have become something of a tradition, including appearances at the Rockefeller Center tree lighting ceremony. Their discography stretches across studio records like Vavoom! and Songs from Lonely Avenue, multiple live albums, and a string of holiday releases including Boogie Woogie Christmas and Dig That Crazy Christmas. Setzer's obsession with his vintage gear, particularly his 1959 Gretsch 6120, remains central to the whole sound.
