Brooklyn Rider has built a reputation as one of the more adventurous string quartets around, largely by refusing to stay in the classical lane. The New York based foursome, with violinists Johnny Gandelsman and Colin Jacobsen, violist Nicholas Cords and cellist Michael Nicolas, made waves early on when they became the only classical act ever invited to play SXSW, broadcast live on NPR in 2010. Philip Glass trusted them enough to record his complete string quartets, including a world premiere recording of his Bent Suite, which says plenty about their standing in the field. Their catalogue is genuinely eclectic: collaborations with Iranian kamancheh master Kayhan Kalhor, banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck, Swedish mezzo Anne Sofie von Otter singing Kate Bush and Björk, and saxophonist Joshua Redman all sit alongside new commissions from composers like Tyondai Braxton and Caroline Shaw. The Brooklyn Rider Almanac, a project built around 15 specially commissioned works each inspired by a different artistic muse, pretty much sums up their approach: more festival than museum.
