About
Named after the Czech Jewish composer and Holocaust victim Pavel Haas, this Prague rooted string quartet has built a reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Eastern European chamber music. Their connection to composers from their homeland runs deep, and it shapes much of what makes their playing distinctive. The Times captured it well: they play as though their lives depend on it. That intensity carries across a wide repertoire, from Beethoven to Dvořák to Janáček. Their recording of Dvořák's String Quartet No. 12, the so called American quartet, was named album of the year by Gramophone. They bring the same fire and passion to the grand Viennese classics as they do to the Bohemian and Slavic works that feel closest to home.
