About

Also known as: Takács String Quartet

Founded in Budapest in 1975, the Takács Quartet has spent five decades building one of the most distinctive live reputations in chamber music. The group celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2025, and its longevity is anchored in part by cellist András Fejér, the sole remaining member from the original lineup. The other three chairs are held by Edward Dusinberre and Harumi Rhodes on violin, and Richard O'Neill on viola. Beyond performing the established string quartet canon, the ensemble has consistently pushed for new repertoire, working with composers from around the world over the years. Their programming often highlights music where individual instruments take on an expressive starring role, such as the Mozart 'Prussian' quartets, which give the cello unusual prominence. Whether in Romantic repertoire or newer commissions, the quartet brings the same focused intensity that has earned them praise from critics and kept audiences coming back.
