About

Also known as: Juillard String Quartet, Juilliard Streichquartett, Julliard String Quartet, Quatuor Juilliard

Few chamber ensembles have the kind of track record the Juilliard String Quartet has built since 1946. Founded at the Juilliard School in New York, the group made history early on by becoming the first to record Béla Bartók's complete string quartets in 1949, then followed that up by being the first to record Arnold Schoenberg's complete quartets in 1953. Over the decades they racked up four Grammy Awards and a NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, while logging over 3,000 concerts across 43 countries and releasing more than 100 recordings. They have performed with Glenn Gould and Aaron Copland, played for Queen Sofía of Spain on a set of royal Stradivarius instruments, and even jammed in the early days with Albert Einstein. Their repertoire runs from Beethoven and Schubert to contemporary composers like Elliott Carter and Milton Babbitt, which sets them apart from ensembles content to stick to the canon. They also appear on the soundtrack of the film Immortal Beloved. The current lineup features violinists Areta Zhulla and Leonard Fu, violist Molly Carr, and cellist Astrid Schween, who in 2016 became the quartet's first female member.
