Founded in 1935 as a studio ensemble for Belgian public broadcasting, the Brussels Philharmonic has grown into one of the more versatile orchestras in Europe. Based at the beautifully renovated Flagey Building in Brussels, they play everything from core symphonic repertoire to film scores, having recorded Howard Shore's music for The Aviator and Ludovic Bource's score for The Artist. They're also no strangers to new music, with a dedicated centre for commissioning orchestral compositions set up under former music director Stéphane Denève. Denève led the orchestra to Carnegie Hall in 2019 and steered a productive run of Deutsche Grammophon recordings, including a prize winning disc of Guillaume Connesson's work. Kazushi Ōno took over as music director from the 2022 to 2023 season, bringing fresh energy to an ensemble that also performs with the Royal Ballet of Flanders and has played in London, Vienna and Tokyo.
