About
Also known as: B. Guy, George Guy
Few guitarists have cast as long a shadow as Buddy Guy. The Chicago blues titan has been cited by Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Stevie Ray Vaughan as a major influence, and Clapton once flatly called him "the best guitar player alive". Guy spent years frustrated at Chess Records, where label boss Leonard Chess dismissed his wild, explosive live style as "just making noise" and kept him mainly on session duty backing Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. It took the blues revival of the early 1990s, and a push from Clapton himself, to finally give Guy the mainstream spotlight he deserved. His 1991 album Damn Right, I've Got the Blues was the breakthrough, and he has kept releasing records ever since, including Blues Don't Lie in 2022. Nine Grammy Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor, and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have followed. His song "Stone Crazy" landed on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitar songs, and the magazine ranked him 27th among the greatest guitarists of all time in 2023. He still holds court at his Chicago club, Buddy Guy's Legends, getting onstage whenever the mood strikes.
