About
Also known as: BH Surfers, Butthole Sufers
Few bands have built a reputation on chaos quite like Butthole Surfers. Formed in San Antonio in 1981 by singer Gibby Haynes and guitarist Paul Leary, they carved out a singular niche in American rock by blending psychedelia, noise rock, and punk into something genuinely unsettling and frequently hilarious. Their live shows were notorious spectacles, and their approach to sound manipulation and tape editing left a mark on the grunge scene that followed. Kurt Cobain named their debut EP one of his ten favorite albums and credited it as one of the fifty most influential records for Nirvana's sound. For most of their career, commercial success stayed out of reach, but 1996's Electriclarryland changed that. The single "Pepper" hit number one on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, giving them a genuine mainstream moment. After the disappointing reception of Weird Revolution in 2001, the band shifted to being primarily a live act before going on hiatus in 2017. They reunited in 2025 and released After the Astronaut, a studio album that had been sitting in limbo for nearly three decades due to record label complications.
