About
Also known as: Béatrice Martin, Béatrice Mireille Martin, Coeur de pirate
Cœur de pirate, the stage name of Montréal's Béatrice Martin, has been quietly doing something pretty rare: keeping chanson française alive and exciting for a generation that might never have found it otherwise. Her piano driven debut album from 2008 put her on the map with a deceptively simple sound, just her voice and keys, and the world took notice when a viral YouTube video used her song "Ensemble" as its soundtrack, landing her coverage on Good Morning America and beyond. Since then she has kept pushing her range in interesting directions. She composed the full score for Ubisoft's video game Child of Light, collaborated with Jay Malinowski and members of The Bronx under the name Armistice, and released a deeply personal fourth album confronting anxiety and trauma. Her fifth album, Perséides, stripped everything back to ten solo piano pieces written while recovering from vocal cord surgery. Her sixth album, Impossible à aimer, took the Juno Award for Francophone Album of the Year in 2022.
