Brisbane's Caligula's Horse have built a reputation as one of Australia's most ambitious progressive metal acts, blending dense, layered compositions with a genuine knack for melody. Formed in 2011 by guitarist Sam Vallen and vocalist Jim Grey, the band started as a two piece before expanding for live shows. Their second album, The Tide, the Thief & River's End, is a fully realised concept record following a cast of rebels through an oppressive city, and it earned them tours alongside Opeth, Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Signing with Inside Out Music pushed them to a wider audience, and their third album Bloom cracked the ARIA Charts in 2015, reaching number 16 on the Australian albums chart. They have kept the momentum going through lineup changes and a pandemic delayed tour, releasing their sixth album Charcoal Grace in early 2024. Through it all, Vallen's guitar work and Grey's vocals have remained the band's creative core.
