Candida Thompson has led the Amsterdam Sinfonietta as artistic director since 2003, shaping a string orchestra of twenty two players that performs without a conductor and commissions new work from composers like HK Gruber, Michel van der Aa, and Thomas Larcher. She plays a Guarneri del Gesù on loan from a private collector, which says a lot about the level she operates at. As a soloist she has appeared with the Wiener Symphoniker, the Tokyo Philharmonic, and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, among others, and performed in the prestigious Saturday Matinee series at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Her recordings with Amsterdam Sinfonietta have landed serious recognition: the Shostakovich string quartet arrangements earned an Opus d'Or and a perfect score from Classics Today, while the Beethoven and Walton disc was named BBC Recording of the Week and received top marks from both Gramophone and Luister Magazine. She also performs chamber music as part of the Hamlet Piano Trio alongside Paolo Giacometti and Xenia Jankovic.
