Capercaillie have spent four decades making traditional Gaelic music feel genuinely alive, blending ancient songs and lyrics with electric guitars, funk basslines, and modern production. The Scottish folk group, led by vocalist Karen Matheson and founded by keyboardist Donald Shaw, scored a place in chart history in 1992 when "Coisich A Ruin" became the first Scottish Gaelic language single to crack the UK Top 40. Albums like Delirium and Secret People pushed their fusion sound into the mainstream, while later records pulled back toward more traditional arrangements without losing the spark entirely. Their 2024 album ReLoved, released to mark the band's fortieth anniversary, pairs new arrangements of older tracks with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. It is their first studio release since At the Heart of It All in 2013, and proves there is still plenty of creative life in one of Celtic folk's most enduring acts.
