About
Also known as: Capella, Cappela
Cappella were put together in 1987 by Italian producer Gianfranco Bortolotti, and spent their early years as a hi NRG influenced house act before hitting their stride in the early 1990s. Their peak moment came in October 1993 when "U Got 2 Let the Music", built around a sample of Alphaville's "Sounds Like a Melody", climbed to number 2 on the UK Singles Chart, kept off the top only by Meat Loaf. That era also gave them "U Got 2 Know", "Move On Baby", and "U & Me", all UK top 10 hits from the same album project. Behind the scenes, Cappella was always more of a production vehicle than a traditional band. Vocalists and rappers came and went, and many of the voices on the records turned out to be session singers or samples rather than the faces performing live. After a second album cycle with vocalist Allison Jordan and a fourth album in 1998, the group disbanded. They made a brief comeback in 2013 with a new couple as frontpeople, spending several years playing 90s revival shows across Europe on the strength of those classic tracks.
