About
Castle Rat are a Brooklyn doom metal band with a whole world built around them. Every member has a fantasy persona, their stage shows involve choreographed battle scenes and elaborate costumes, and their nemesis "The Rat Reaperess" actually appears on stage to face them. Vocalist and rhythm guitarist Riley Pinkerton, known as The Rat Queen, draws comparisons to Grace Slick, while the band's sound pulls from Black Sabbath, Witchfinder General, and Jefferson Airplane, wrapped in a medieval fantasy aesthetic inspired by Frank Frazetta's artwork. Their 2024 debut Into the Realm topped Bandcamp's hard rock chart and put them on the map. Their second album The Bestiary, a 13 track creature themed heavy metal record centred on a wizard character, debuted at number 11 on the UK rock and metal albums chart and landed on Rolling Stone's list of the best metal albums of 2025. The Kickstarter they ran for it raised $139,000 in 37 minutes, which tells you everything about the kind of devotion they inspire.
