Causa Sui have been quietly building one of the most distinctive catalogs in psych rock since their self titled debut in 2005. The Odense quartet of Jakob Skøtt, Jonas Munk, Rasmus Rasmussen, and Jess Kahr plays entirely instrumental, and their sound pulls in directions you wouldn't always expect: heavy stoner rock grooves sitting right next to ambient drift and abstract improvisation, drawing comparisons to electric era Miles Davis and Can. Their Sessions albums, which bring in guest musicians, are a particular highlight, stretching the sound into genuinely loose, exploratory territory. Influences like Popul Vuh, Gabor Szabo, and The Allman Brothers Band give you a sense of how wide the net is cast. Despite rarely playing live, they have put out two live records, and with fourteen albums to their name including the recent releases From the Source and In Flux, they show no signs of slowing down.
