Charlie Winston built his early reputation playing bass for his brother Tom Baxter and scoring London theatre productions, but it was France that really took him to heart. His 2009 album Hobo entered the French charts at number 3 and eventually climbed to number 1, sitting in the top 10 for 30 weeks and going platinum. The single "Like a Hobo" topped the French SNEP charts too, and Winston picked up a European Border Breakers Award in 2010 for best UK artist in Europe. His folk tinged indie pop sound has kept him a consistent presence in French speaking markets across five studio albums, with a sixth, Love Isn't Easy, arriving in October 2025. Along the way he covered Bob Dylan for an Amnesty International compilation, had his track "She Went Quietly" featured on Grey's Anatomy, and appeared at a global Peace One Day telecast alongside Jude Law and Sharon Stone. He has been based on the French Riviera for years, which probably explains the loyalty.
