About
The Cheers had a knack for novelty records, and one of them became a mid 1950s hit about a leather jacketed biker. "Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots" went to number six in the US, following their earlier hit "(Bazoom) I Need Your Lovin'", which reached number fifteen in 1954. That first one was also the first Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller song to chart on the American pop charts, and it counts as one of the earliest rock and roll hits by a white group. The Los Angeles based vocal group recorded for Capitol Records and leaned on the songwriting duo again for "Chicken", a 1955 parody of the central scene in James Dean's Rebel Without a Cause. The lineup included Bert Convy, later a familiar face hosting TV game shows like Tattletales and Win, Lose or Draw, and Perry Botkin Jr., who went on to win a Grammy for Nadia's Theme. Sue Allen and Gil Garfield rounded out the group.
