About
Chris Cheek is a St. Louis born tenor saxophonist who has quietly become one of the most in demand session players in jazz, showing up on over a hundred albums as a sideman. His post bop sensibility runs through everything he does, whether leading his own projects or locking in with bandmates like Paul Motian or Guillermo Klein. He co founded Bloomdaddies with fellow saxophonist Seamus Blake, and the two have also teamed up for releases on Criss Cross Jazz. As a bandleader, Cheek has put out a solid run of albums on Fresh Sound, starting with his 1997 debut I Wish I Knew, which featured Kurt Rosenwinkel. Later records like Vine and Blues Cruise kept that momentum going. His 2016 release Saturday Songs, recorded in Valencia and put out on Sunnyside Records, showed he had no intention of standing still.
