About
What started as a loose California experiment quickly turned into something far more committed. Chris Robinson, the Black Crowes frontman, launched the Brotherhood in 2011 with guitarist Neal Casal, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, bassist Mark Dutton, and drummer George Sluppick, and within months they were deep into a 118 date North American tour. Robinson calls them a "farm to table psychedelic band", which tells you a lot: long songs, live first instincts, and a sound that pulls from blues rock, southern rock, and the jammy, exploratory spirit of the Grateful Dead. They moved fast in the studio too, releasing two albums in 2012 alone. By 2019 they had six studio records to their name, the last being Servants of the Sun, which Robinson wrote specifically with the live show in mind. Tragically, the band had already announced their disbandment when guitarist Neal Casal passed away in August 2019, casting a long shadow over what had been one of the more genuinely adventurous acts in the American jam scene.
