About
Cities Aviv is a Memphis rapper and producer who started out fronting a hardcore punk band before fully switching to hip hop. His 2011 debut mixtape, Digital Lows, got good write ups from Pitchfork and Spin, and his follow up Black Pleasure was an attempt at a pop record, with vocals buried in the mix thanks to the influence of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. Since 2018 everything has come out on his own label, Total Works, also known as D.O.T. He is not one to sit still. In 2020 he put out three fully improvised albums, known as The Triad, and he runs a side project called African American Sound Recordings, which leans into sampling, field recordings, noise and ambient. His 2024 record Cafe Tom Tom split fans with its instrumental sound, while Electric Chair pushed his sound further out with a raspy, sore throat vocal style. Most recently came Even Colder Spring in March 2026, which many call his best work since Secret Waters.
