Clive Nolan has been one of progressive rock's most quietly prolific figures, holding down keyboard duties in both Pendragon and Arena for decades while somehow also finding time to write rock operas, musicals and the occasional 43 minute metal epic. That last one is real: he penned the lyrics for Edge of Sanity's "Crimson II", a single continuous metal song that runs the length of a short film. His rock opera She, based on the Rider Haggard novel, became a full theatrical musical and has been staged from Poland to Bolivia, where the Bolivian government made him an honorary visitor to Santa Cruz. Nolan also co runs Verglas Music, the label he founded with Arena drummer Mick Pointer, and manages his own studio, Thin Ice Studios. His musical Alchemy played the West End's Jermyn Street Theatre in 2014, and a sequel, King's Ransom, followed in 2017, with both productions now being developed as feature films. He has picked up the Classic Rock Society Best Keyboard Player award seven times, which says something about how consistently he has shown up for the genre.
