Cochemea Gastelum is a multi instrumentalist and composer of Yaqui descent, born in California and now based in New York, who has spent over 25 years building a career that spans both celebrated sideman work and a distinct solo voice. He was a long standing member of Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings and has collaborated with Amy Winehouse, Run The Jewels and Jon Batiste. His solo records come out on Daptone Records, where he has put together a trilogy rooted in his Indigenous heritage, dreams and stories of survival. The third volume, Vol. 3: Ancestros Futuros, completes that arc, recorded live and analogue with the Daptone rhythm section. Drawing inspiration from figures like Yusef Lateef, he lets saxophone and flute carry the emotional weight, resulting in music that feels closer to a spiritual ceremony than a straightforward concert.
