About
Cold built their sound around a brooding blend of post grunge and alternative metal, and it was their second album, 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage, that put them on the map. Singles like "End of the World" and "No One" were fixtures on hard rock radio, and the latter climbed to number 13 on Modern Rock Tracks while the video ran in heavy rotation on MTV2. Their follow up, Year of the Spider, pushed even further, hitting number three on the Billboard 200 and producing "Stupid Girl", the band's only entry on the Billboard Hot 100. A spider has been their emblem since the late nineties, inspired by drummer Sam McCandless's pet tarantula named Wednesday, and as McCandless put it: "Our music kind of creeps along like a spider." Front man Scooter Ward is the one constant through all the lineup shuffles, label disputes, and a full disbandment in 2006. The band reunited in 2009 and have kept going since, releasing Superfiction in 2011 and The Things We Can't Stop in 2019. Their 2023 YouTube footage from the Year of the Spider anniversary tour shows the Jacksonville act still drawing a crowd for those early 2000s anthems.
