Cold War Kids built their reputation on a raw, bluesy indie rock sound that felt lived in from day one. Their 2006 debut Robbers & Cowards sold close to 200,000 copies and drew serious attention for its morose storytelling and blues rock edge, even if Pitchfork took shots at the Christian symbolism in the lyrics. The band pushed back, and their cult following grew anyway. Loyalty to Loyalty in 2008 went deeper into narrative songwriting, political references, and philosophical tangents, earning warmer notices than the debut. NME called it everything you hoped music might be. Mine Is Yours in 2011 marked a noticeable shift toward a more polished pop sound, partly thanks to producer Jacquire King. The band has kept evolving since, releasing their seventh studio album New Age Norms 1 in 2019. The current lineup features Nathan Willett on vocals, piano and guitar, alongside Matt Maust, David Quon, Matthew Schwartz, and Joe Plummer.
