Few bands can claim a run as stacked as the Commodores had in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Out of Tuskegee, Alabama, the six piece funk and soul group signed to Motown in 1972 after catching attention opening for the Jackson 5, then spent the next decade racking up hits that swung between sweaty dancefloor bangers and lush ballads. "Brick House", "Easy", "Three Times a Lady", "Sail On" and "Still" all charted in the top five in the US, and the band has shifted over 70 million albums worldwide. Their instrumental debut track "Machine Gun" became a fixture at American sporting events, but it was the vocal chemistry between Lionel Richie and Walter Orange that really defined the group. After Richie departed for a solo career in the early 1980s, the band regrouped with singer J.D. Nicholas and delivered one more landmark moment: "Nightshift", a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson that earned the Commodores their first Grammy Award. The core of Orange, William King and Nicholas has kept the group going ever since.
