About

Also known as: Country Teasers, The

Country Teasers built their reputation on a sound that critics struggled to pin down, and that was very much the point. Formed in Edinburgh in 1993, the band started out dealing in literate, scathingly satirical lyrics over discordant, repetitive music that invited comparisons to William S. Burroughs steering Joy Division and The Fall through a set of art damaged country and western songs. Later records threw that template out the window, pulling in rap, goth, folk, disco, electronic and noise until the band drew comparisons to Royal Trux, Butthole Surfers and Ween. Frontman Ben Wallers writes lyrics that have been likened to Jonathan Swift, Bill Hicks and Chris Morris, using deliberately provocative language to poke at racism and sexism by inhabiting the worldview of the people who traffic in those attitudes. Live, the band is famously hard to predict, a collision of boozy unprofessionalism and high concept performance art. One New York Press writer put it bluntly: Country Teasers does art better than Sonic Youth and drunkenness better than The Pogues.
