Few bands can claim to have helped invent a genre, but Cruachan genuinely can. Formed in Dublin in 1992 by multi instrumentalist Keith Fay, the Irish folk metal act built something distinct by weaving Celtic mythology into their lyrics and leaning hard into traditional Irish sounds. That specific blend earned them the label Celtic metal, and plenty of recognition as one of folk metal's founding acts. Their third album Folk Lore, co produced by Shane MacGowan of The Pogues, even landed them a minor chart hit in Ireland with a cover of "Ride On". Nine studio albums in, their catalogue runs from early black metal roughness through to more traditional metal territory and back again, including the concept album Nine Years of Blood, which closes out their Blood Trilogy by retelling the Nine Years' War.
