Cryptic Shift are a Leeds based extreme metal band whose music reads like a pulp sci fi paperback set to abrupt tempo changes, death growls and a wall of technically ferocious riffing. Their debut album Visitations from Enceladus, released in 2020 through Blood Harvest Records, landed them a spot on Metal Hammer's best metal albums of that year, with The Quietus calling it "damn near essential" and proof that Britain has something real to say in the current wave of progressive death metal. The band draws on an unusually wide palette, pulling in jazz, doom, psychedelic rock, black metal and noise alongside the death and thrash foundations. The overarching story running through their lyrics spans cosmic horror, outer space adventure and the fiction of Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, with a narrative thread that stretches from 2017's Cosmic Dreams all the way through to Visitations from Enceladus. Comparisons to Death and Atheist get thrown around a lot, and they are not entirely unearned.
