About
Also known as: Casals Quartet
Named after the legendary cellist Pablo Casals, this Barcelona based string quartet has spent over two decades building a reputation that stretches from the Wigmore Hall to Carnegie Hall and the Concertgebouw. They got off to a flying start by winning first prize at the 2000 London International String Quartet Competition, then the International Brahms Competition in Hamburg two years later, and Spain awarded them its Premio Nacional de Música in 2006. One of their quirks is that the first and second violin roles can switch between players depending on the piece, which keeps things fluid and unpredictable. The quartet records for Harmonia Mundi, with a catalogue that roams freely from Spanish rarities like Arriaga and Toldrá to Haydn, Mozart, Brahms, Bartók and Ligeti. The Observer called them an "excellent Spanish ensemble" who bring "supple radiance and flair" to Schubert, which is about as good a capsule review as any quartet could hope for. They have also premiered works by living composers including György Kurtág and James MacMillan, and even performed on the decorated Stradivarius collection at the Royal Palace of Madrid.
