About
Also known as: Boy George and Culture Club
Few bands captured the chaos and colour of the early 1980s quite like Culture Club. Fronted by Boy George, whose androgynous look and sharp wit made him one of the most recognisable figures of the decade, the London group blended new wave with American soul, reggae, and even touches of country music into something genuinely hard to pin down. Their debut single 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me' hit number one in the UK and topped charts in twenty three countries, and they became the first act since The Beatles to score three top ten hits in the US from a debut album. Their second album Colour by Numbers sold over ten million copies worldwide, with 'Karma Chameleon' becoming the biggest selling single of 1983 in the UK and a number one in the US too. The band picked up a Grammy for Best New Artist and two Brit Awards in 1984, and 'Time (Clock of the Heart)' earned a spot on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of 500 songs that shaped rock and roll. After splitting up and reuniting more than once, Culture Club have proved remarkably durable for a band so tied to a specific moment in pop history.
