About
Nicholas Rattigan, the Nevada born artist behind Current Joys, works across lo fi indie, bedroom pop, new wave and indie rock, blending quavering vocals and sentimental, self interrogating songwriting into a sound that feels intensely personal. He is also a multi instrumentalist, music video director and journalist, and serves as drummer and lead vocalist for the indie surf rock band Surf Curse. His approach is as visual as it is sonic, shaped by a deep engagement with cinema and filmmakers such as Lars Von Trier, Terrence Malick, Agnès Varda and Andrei Tarkovsky. Voyager, the seventh Current Joys album, pushed things into new territory, layering the raw, live wire energy of his earlier releases with orchestral arrangements across sixteen tracks. It reads as part personal confession, part response to the films that inspire him, a wide ranging journey of self discovery that sounds unlike anything in the back catalogue.
