Cynic built their reputation on one of the most audacious records to come out of the early 90s death metal scene. Their debut Focus, released in 1993, blended death growls, vocoder vocals, jazz fusion, and progressive rock into something that had no real precedent, and it quickly earned a cult following. The Miami band went quiet after 1994, with members scattering into projects like Æon Spoke and Gordian Knot, before returning in 2006 and releasing Traced in Air in 2008 on French label Season of Mist. A string of EPs followed, then the third album Kindly Bent to Free Us in 2014. Tragedy hit the band hard when founding drummer Sean Reinert and longtime bassist Sean Malone both died within eleven months of each other in 2020. Paul Masvidal pushed forward, and Ascension Codes arrived in December 2021.
